Upgrading from an F810, F820 or F840

to a FAS900 Series Appliance

Required hardware and tools

The following list specifies the tools and equipment you need for the upgrade process.

  • #2 Phillips screwdriver
  • Grounding strap

Recommended software, firmware, and manuals

The following list specifies the software, firmware, and manuals you need for the upgrade process.

  • Data ONTAP 6.3 software or later
  • Caution: There are two versions of Data ONTAP; one designed for the F800 series of filers and one designed for the FAS900 series of appliances. Both appliances must be running the same version level of Data ONTAP, but each appliance must be running the version designed specifically for that appliance series.
  • Filer firmware 4.1_i2 or later for the FAS900
  • Filer firmware 4.0_i1 or later for the F800
  • Current disk and shelf firmware bundled with Data ONTAP 6.3 or later
  • IP address for the FAS900 RMC (Remote Management Controller)
  • System Configuration Guide from the NOW Web site
  • FAS900 Series Hardware and Service Guide
  • F800 Series Field Service Guide
  • Software Setup Guide
  • The appropriate disk shelf guide

Note: The FAS900 is 6U high. Make sure that you allow for the appropriate amount of space for the filer and disk shelves in your rack. You must also use the supplied rack mount kit when installing the FAS900.

Preparing for the upgrade

To prepare for the upgrade, complete the following steps.

Note: The following steps assume that you are upgrading to a FAS900 with the same names and IP addresses.

Step Action
1 Measure the amount of space you have in your equipment rack. Make sure that you allow for the appropriate amount of space for the FAS900. You might need to move the disk shelves in order to accommodate the FAS900.
2 Check the System Configuration Guide to ensure that the disk shelves and any tape devices you are migrating are supported on the FAS900 and to ensure that the network cards, FC-AL adapters and other adapters used in the F800 are supported in the FAS900. Also check the slot assignments for these cards.

Note: Check the tape backup vendor to ensure that the backup utility is compatible with NDMP backup application in Data ONTAP.

3

Obtain an IP address for the RMC adapter.

4 Check the Media Kit in the in the FAS900 packaging for the version of Data ONTAP shipped with the appliance. You must install the same version level of Data ONTAP on the F800.
5 Go to the NOW site at http://now.netapp.com/NOW/main/software.shtml and download the F800 version of Data ONTAP that matches the version with the FAS900 Media Kit.
6 Check the shipment contents to ensure that you have the correct number of LC-to-SC cables for the FAS900.

Upgrading the F810, F820, or F840

To upgrade to a FAS900, complete the following steps.

Step Action
1 Untar the files you downloaded for the F800, then install Data ONTAP on your F800 by entering one of the following commands:
install_netapp
or
setup

Caution: Do not reboot the filer after the installation is complete.

2 Download the installed image to the disks by entering the following command:

download

3 Update the disk firmware by entering the following command:

disk_fw_update

Note: Disk I/O activity is suspended until disk firmware updating is completed.

4 Reboot the F800.
5

Edit the /etc/rc file in the root volume on the F800 to match the adapter locations in the FAS900. Make sure that you save the file on the F800.

Note: You might need to update the /etc/hosts file if host names contain appended interfaces IDs.

6 Halt the F800, then turn off the filer and disk shelves. Disconnect it from the power source, console, network, tape adapters, and FC-AL adapters connected to the F800.
7 Remove the F800 from the rack or system cabinet and install the FAS900 in its place.
8 Recable the system, as  FAS900 Series Hardware and Service Guide.

Note: Make sure that you use the LC/SC cables to connect the FAS900 to the disk shelves.

9 Turn on the disk shelves, then the FAS900.
10 Update the licenses on the FAS900 by entering the following command:

license add xxxx

Note: If you are using a version of Data ONTAP earlier than 6.4, the command is license option=code.

11 Configure the RMC, as described in the Software Setup Guide.
12 Reboot the FAS900. The system should boot properly. If it does not boot properly, contact Customer Support for assistance.

Decommissioning the F800

The following procedure assumes that you are taking the F800 completely out of service and returning it to Network Appliance. To complete the decommissioning process, complete the following steps.

Step Action
1 Decommission the system through the NOW Web site at http://now.netapp.com/. Search for Decommission this System and follow the instructions.
2 Return the F800 to Network Appliance, as described in the SRA instructions shipped with the FAS900. Contact Customer Support at 408-822-6686 if you need the SRA instructions.
